Status Update 12/1/18

Okay, so it’s been a little while since I’ve updated this.  Here’s a bit of what has been going on:

My gaming rig began malfunctioning.  My 3d printer tried to catch fire and eat itself.  Also a holiday got it the way, with me having to rely on my unreliable tablet.

I’ve since been working to rectify this situation.

The gaming rig was unstable.  It would often not start up, take a long time starting up, or have issues in the reverse direction; it wouldn’t shut down at times.  I also kept seeing messages about memory being faulty and drives needing repair.  It turns out that I had at least two separate issues going on, though there may have been more that got caught up in the diagnostics, troubleshooting programs, virus scans, and updates that I used in the process of trying to fix things.

Issue 1: My RAM was going bad.

Issue 2: My secondary SSD was malfunctioning.

Now that I’ve replaced the RAM and removed the secondary SSD from the system, thr computer seems to be running fine.

For the printer, that involved replacing the print head assembly.  It was mostly straightforward.  The worst part of that was that I had to remove the old rewiring, and put the new wiring in.  The cables were wrapped to deal with wear and tear, so I had to unwrap them, pull out the wires, put the new ones in, rewrap, and zip tie them.  Not so much difficult as tedious and time consuming,

I’ve also gotten a new laptop so I won’t be without one on trips.  I may end up having to review it on here soon.

Halloween 2018: Ghostbusters Uniform

Ghostbusters have always been a favorite franchise of mine.  I grew up watching the Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters as a kid, and when I was older I loved the movies.  I find it fitting that this go up here, as they are true Technomancers themselves.  They are even referred to as modern wizards by magic users in the extended lore.  If I recall correctly, Egon is even descended from a wizard!

Anyway, I mentioned this before, but I finally built a better Ghostbusters uniform than I had in the past.  I wasn’t quite able to get the jumpsuit like I wanted in time (not too surprising, given my size), so I found a way to make it work.  I’m pretty proud about the result.  I was getting compliments all day.  I guess that’s part of why a lot of people cosplay.  Between Spirit Halloween and GBfans.org, it was easier than ever to put together a reasonable costume.

Here’s what it looked like:

I think it turned out pretty well, but I think I’m going to be continuing to improve on it in the future.  I’ve already seen some references and gotten some ideas in mind for upgrades.  I think I’ll try them out on the older Spirit Halloween proton pack at some point.

“Get a scan with your tricorder”

I’ve been working on a 3d print of a tricorder.   I’ve wanted one ever since I was a kid.  I found the model here: Tricorder

I figured I’d print it as a test of the new spool of  “silver” filament that I got recently.  I’ve still got a ways to go on finishing it.  Here are the images I have of it so far:

It took a little bit of post-processing to get it to where it is now.  As-printed, the hinges don’t allow the full range of motion of the flip portion.  I had to carve them out a bit.  However, in the process of testing, the gripping portion of the hinge brackets broke, and they were never great to begin with.  I still need to find a way to manufacture and attach pieces to hold the hinges in so the bottom doesn’t fall off anymore.  And my printer just started going haywire in my last attempt at printing parts for the hinges.  It’s now deadline for a bit, but that’s another story.

The other issue is that I printed it at the “Fast” setting in Simplify3D for my printer, and it seems mostly good enough for me.  I do think I made one mistake.  Since this was a wide but not terribly tall print, I printed this with rafting, to make it easier to remove from the print bed.  The tradeoff was the terrible surface quality on the bottom of it, as you can see in the picture on the right.  I’m still debating whether to try to fix the surface with a filler, which would require me to then sand, prime, and pain the whole thing, or just to call it wear and tear from usage.

I also need to find, print, and attach the appropriate decals.  I’m considering asking a friend who has a machine for printing and cutting vinyl to make the decals for me.

Anyway, I’m much closer to one of my childhood goals of having my own tricorder!Tricorder_Closed.jpg

This also prompted an interesting conversation with my RPG group.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”  ~Arthur C. Clarke

Have a character whose backstory is that they are a Vulcan who is posing as an elf wizard, and relate every spell back to him using a device that creates the same effect.  A tricorder being used for Detect Magic was the first example.  Then there was stuff like using various settings on a phaser for various fire spells.  Just a thought.  It would also explain a wizard not having any local or historical knowledge.

Fantasy Treasure Chest

I helped fund this kickstarter a few years back.  I’ve been waiting on it for quite a while, and it FINALLY showed up today.

It’s far overdue, and not quite in the condition originally promised, but I guess that’s a Kickstarter for you.  It was missing one of the keys I ordered, and replacement parts were shipped with it for better metal components rather than having been installed by the seller.  The seller had also promised “something extra” with the chests if we didn’t demand refunds.  I didn’t see anything extra, other than parts that should have been installed in the first place.  Still debating how I feel about this.

Thankfully, though, I haven’t seen any signs of the mold that some of the chests got in the shipping process from China.

Ghostbusters Proton Grenade Costume Prop

This is one of my favorite designs now.  I’ve been working on my Ghostbuster costume lately, and it got me thinking.

I knew I had seen some various ones, but the one I liked best is here:

(from the above link)

So I designed my own in AutoDesk Fusion 360 and printed it out the past couple of days.proton grenade

You can find the files here:

Fair warning: the pieces might not fit properly, I sized them in different pieces of software while trying to figure out how the tolerances would work out and was kinda guesstimating.  Also, the original model has an antenna thingie on the side, which is snapped off in my print.  I wasn’t paying enough attention when I pulled it off the printer.

USB Port Issues

For quite a while now, though apparently I haven’t been looking for it most of the time, I’ve been receiving messages on my computer about a lack of USB resources.  It appears that this is because, while using a USB 3.0 hub to attach all my sensors to for ease of connection/disconnection, I was overloading the 3.0 port that the hub attached to.  Simplest solution is to plug it into a different USB port… but the only 3.0 port I have left on the computer is on the front of the computer (and it still reads as a 2.0 port for some reason in Oculus).  I’m considering adding a USB 3.0 card to my computer in one of the empty slots, but that still doesn’t address the ease of disconnection when not in use.  I could use an extension USB cable… but the sensor I plan on using is already on an extension cable, and the connection point is next to the ceiling.  I may have to swap things around so that I’m using another sensor that’s not on an extension to avoid signal loss.

Why do I care about disconnection?  Oculus sensors are modified webcams, and in general it’s better not to leave webcams plugged in when not in use.

Oculus Touch Controls Wall Mount

I found this wall mount on Thingiverse a while ago, but hadn’t taken the time to print it before.  It’s mounted with command strip tape, so we’ll see how long that holds up.  There were other versions that used screws, but I prefer not to put holes in my walls when i can avoid it.

There’s another add on option for hanging the headset on that same mount, but I don’t think I trust the single command strip to hold that much weight.  I’m still weighing my options, but I would like to have some stand or mount for it to keep it from taking up horizontal space on my desk or table when not in use.

IT’S ALIVE!

The printer is up and running again.  I reattached the belt with the new replacement part, lubed the rods and z axis screws with a spray can of white lithium grease, put a couple of drops of sewing machine oil on the pulley for the y axis, and tightened all the screws after reassembly.

Now all that’s left is calibration.  The xyz axis calibration cube came out alright, but the surface finish test and the surfaces of my minis could be better.  I also need to figure out why the hands keep getting sliced into two shells each instead of being merged as a unit.

Viewing Globe

Caveat:  This is not sponsored, and it is far from being comprehensive research on my part.

I was toying with the idea of how to make a crystal ball (my favorite example being the viewing globe from Power Rangers), and started poking around.  I came across the following article that came out last year, where someone made something that looks a lot like a crystal ball.

360-degree screen-free floating 3D image in a crystal ball using a spatially imaged iris and rotational multiview DFD technologies

It looks like a cool advancement, though I was hoping for something much more portable (and less cost-intensive).  The display really does look like a crystal ball, with a lot of attachments around it, as it uses a bunch of cell phones as projectors.

And… on to more browsing!
